alternator conundrum

Ok, I’m sorta stuck again. I pulled the alternator off the ’86 5ktqa because
I thought it wasn’t doing it’s job: 11volts at the jumper post under the
hood while running, everything on the car turned off. So, took it down to
the rebuilder who sez nothing wrong with it, good volts, good amps. Hmmm
 so
I go to put it back in the car, and realize I should have thought twice
about pulling it. To get it out of the pivot to adjust the belt tension, I
really had to pry it out, and now of course, I’m having even greater
difficulty in getting it back in there (it doesn’t help that it’s raining
and cold out). My thought was borrowing a floor jack and carefully stuffing
it back in, unless there’s other better suggestions. Then I’ll start
measuring voltages, but another question: is there one wire from the
alternator to the battery? Then another to the jumper post and other places
around the car? I have a Haynes book, but it’s a bit sketchy about this. Any
advice is much appreciated.
