UPDATE - Is it the battery or the alternator that's at fault?

they are one unit, yes.  mounted on the back of the alternator with two
screws, one of which will break if you are not careful.

I'd recommend replacing those screws with stainless steel when
reinstalling the regulator assembly.

hand room can be tight due to the AC condenser, but it can be done.
