Thanks Marc and Martin,
          The problem was the brushes on the voltage regulator. they had
worn down to 1/4 the size of the new one. after installing it the reg I
checked with the voltmeter and it was about 12.9 when before it was at 9.8
and then would sometines spike. It sis a good thing that the volt reg is a
sep piece(new alt $599 at the delear, not that I would pay that much. Ouch).
  Next I need to get that @#$%^& A/C out before the condensor eats my hand
off if I have to do this again.
