In my case, finding a new downpipe for an urquattro was not considered easy=
, or cheap. I don't remember the dealer price, or even if they were availa=
ble anymore (it's been 6 months), but trying to reweld was a viable option.=
  It was worth the risk, and I was lucky to find a used for a backup. But =
you do make a very good point. A DP for one of Jerry's cars would probably=
 be much easier to find, and cheaper, and therefore, as you point out, the =
best advice may very well be to get a new/used one.

  Brandon, you would recommend rewelding a cast steel part when it would be=
 just as easly to replace it with an uncracked used part? I don't know if =
that is the best advice.

    So my advice is to find a
    good welder and take the DP to him and show him what you want to be don=
e=2E  I
    went to a few places during my search. Good luck.
