Might I point out that the A3 preceded the Golf IV by two years?
Anyway, be glad that Audi's part of VW, as it is what makes parts cheaper-
at least aftermarket stuff. Not a lot of companies would develop stuff for
the relatively low-volume A4 market if it wouldn't fit on the high-volume
Passat also. I'm glad that Audis are related to VWs because for my type 82
(Fox) the only (performance) parts available are intended for VWs. Nobody
cares about this old Audi anymore.
Oh, and the platform sharing is also responsible for the excellent
development of our cars, Audi wouldn't be able to make such well-developed
cars as an independent manufacturer. Let's face it, they just don't have
the volume of big guns like BMW and M-B. At the very least we wouldn't get
completely new cars so often...
Regards, Tom
PS Have you driven a recent VW? I've driven Boras, Golfs and Passats and
was really impressed. Maybe an A4 is still higher quality than a Passat,
but there's not that much between them.
