I had the same issue with my CGT (NG engine). In my case, the Hall Sensor had come loose from the distributor (the feet were broken, now being held by a zip-tie).

Hello list, let me start by wishing everyone a great day with your
running Audis :D
ok, now my 1988 Audi 90 FWD has been suffering from something terrible.
whenever the throttle is applied, the car lunges, shakes, stutters and
backfires. and it has been getting worse everyday. It started very
small has gotten to the point where i cant drive it anymore.
A local shop diagnosed the Direct Port Injection... but they haven't the
foggiest how to fix it.
Its odd, if i let the car sit for a few days, it will run fine for about
5 minutes until the symptoms kick in.
the idle is fine and it doesn't kill out. does anyone think they can
help a man in need? thanks!
