Home heating oil is indeed dyed red...diesel fuel isn't.
Its easier than sticking a rag in...pop the hood. The VW TDI's, for
example, have a clear section of fuel line and one can clearly
observe the color.
You shouldn't use home heating oil anyway...sulfur content is higher.
