Jim, yes you can do that.
It's a little hard to explain, and I didn't do any pictures yet (of the
reassembly -waiting for parts). Basically there are a couple of rods
held to their actuators by plastic clips. One clip just rotates back
(you're never sure WHAT direction that is) off rod, one has a little
"cap-like clip" to pop back first, then the rods come out of their
actuator.
Now the fun part.
See that little "handle" or tab back there? Rotate it towards the jamb
end of the door (about 110 deg). Remove it downward.
This releases the "outside" parts from the "inside" parts. "Outside" is
basically the lock trim, everything else is attached to the latch. It
is actually the way the "fork" of the plastic box slips around the neck
of the lock cylinder after insertion through the outer trim, and the way
the locking tab prevents them from separating which holds the whole
thing together. From inside, pull the latch handle "box" carefully
inside enough to free it from the outer trim and back towards the hinge
side of the door (careful not to scratch the outer latch handle) and
remove it for r&r.
Pictures are worth at least a thousand words here, if you are not in a
big rush I'll re-dis-assemble my 200 and snap some of the parts position
and directions of movement described above. Megan might have done this
already. Megan, are you there? --Gary

Ye Olde Bentlye says you can remove the door handle and parts without
removing the "component carrier" part of the door (which holds the
regulator, and is bolted with about 5000 bolts.)
The door handle is attached with a torx bolt (easy to remove), and,
apparently a clip over all the operating rod stuff. (I'm trying to remove
the operating rod stuff to replace a couple of parts that lock the door).
However, I can't see, and can barely feel, the circlip. Any help?
