'87 5kCSQ rear brake proportioning valve?

Hi fellow Audinauts,

I know, it's been a while since you last heard from me; I've been
traveling and will be off to Iceland(Island) shortly. But before I go I
have a question for your collective wit. Is the rear brake
proportioning valve that is in the brake line just forward of the left
rear brake on my '87 5kCSQ really necessary? The arm and spring fell
off a while back and I have noticed the the rear disks are getting
quite rusty. I do not use the car much, but the front brake look normal
and I can knock off the rust on the rears by driving a 1/2 mile or so
with the emergency brake on. Rumour has it that this valve is a pricey
lil' devil and if it is not really necessary I will just remove it from
the system and add a straight bit of brake line in its place.

All thoughts on this subject will be gratefully appreciated.

Happy motoring,

Shef
