Replacing A/C system

OK, I guess I must have the GM version. It does look sorta like a torpedo, and it's
real heavy. So there's a lot going against this type of compressor other than the
cost compared to the Denso. So how possible is it to replace my unit w/ an entirely
different one? I'd like to get one compatible w/ R-134a, weigh much less, and
relatively cheap. I know there are some out there, but I'm not sure which to look
for. Would a newer GM unit fit the bill? Or better yet, how bout a Sanden or other
type compressor. The Sanden units are s'posed to be for marine use, but they're
much cheaper, lighter, and compat. w/ R-134a. The mounting might be a
challenge, but I bet I could get it attached w/ a little creativity. But I have no idea
what numbers to look for, like displacement, rpm, BTU/hr, etc. Does anyone have
any ball park estimates of any of these numbers? If I do this, I'd probably change
almost the entire system, except for the evaporator. That should make future
service cheap and easy, while retaining the car's original cooling capacity and w/o
risk of r-134a leaking out. This could be the next best option for people looking to
shed some pounds off the car, and save some cash during a/c system rebuild. I
really appreciate all the advice. Thanks to all for your help.
