This is a common problem with the older mirrors.
I have had success tightening them up by taking them apart and straightening
out the aluminum frame inside. It's soft and deforms too easily to maintain
its function. You will need to remove a mounting plate inside that is melted
on 4 posts to the mirror housing. It is very easy to then remount them with 4
small screws.
I first removed the glass to get a clearer look at everything, via the slot
in the bottom of the mirror. I then pulled the mirror away from the body far
enough to gain access to the expansion pin that attaches the aluminum frame
to the door mount portion of the unit. Drive the pin out, grind the 4 melt
points clear, and the unit will come apart. Straighten it out (in a vice or
hammer and anvil) and reassemble. The "straightness" is relative and
precision of form isn't critical. You'll see when you get it out.
During reassembly it helps to be an octopus, as the 2 springs are contrary
SOB's, but it's worth it to be rid of the loose rattling mirrors, and cost
effective (read price = $0).
