Low pressure shutoff.  By jumping the compressor (you could have jumped
the pressure switch, up over the evaporator under the cowl cover) you got
things moving and increased the pressure in the system enough to satisfy
(close) the pressure switch.  Might not kick in after sitting overnight
unless you get a charge in it.
