Plastic accordian thing in front bumper 200TQ???

I did a timing belt/waterpump change last weekend on my 1990 200TQ
10V. I removed the front bumper for easier access, it did make the
job easier. In the bumper is a black plastic thing with accordian
like sides, about the size of a shoe box. It was not attached to
anything, just sitting there. Does anybody know what this thing is
and its purpose?
