automatic locks

Lee-
At least from the B5 platform A4/S4 and the C5 platform A6, when the
airbags are
triggered, the hazard lights automatically come on and the doors unlock,
so that is
not a concern in the case of a serious accident. Audi already thought of
that.

IIRC, it is illegal to lock the doors while driving on the highway in
Germany.

Some car manufacturers specifically warn against locking the car doors,
except in areas in which you're concerned about security.

If you get into an accident on the road, it will just be that much more
difficult to extract you from the vehicle...and the vehicle locks won't
keep the door from opening on impact...the latch mechanism is designed
for that whether the door is locked or not.

So why would you want the car to lock automatically?

(auto door locks are a pet peeve of mine with rental cars. If I wanted
the doors locked, I'd lock 'em!)
