Hi Brian:
I have a 84 4K which had a broken speedo. The culpert turned out not to
be broken teeth on a gear but the whole gear slipping on the shaft.
I dismanteled the speedo and pulled the rod out. Where the slipping
gear was located, I gripped the shaft with the sharp teeth of a pair of
visegrips. This put some very good teeth on the shaft itself. Loaded
the gears back on the shaft and have had no trouble since. About 12K
since the fix.
Earlier, I had tried putting epoxy on the gear and shaft without
dismantelling. It didn't work.
Another thing I discovered was if you push the "start over button"
while the car is in motion, this would cause the gear to spin on the
rod and break the glue or grind on the teeth just made with the pliars.
The lesson of not jabbing the reset while the car is in motion , I
learned the hard way.
Gluck Haben,
Donald
