Heater Blower removal - Type 44

Hi Brendan;
The heater box has to come out to get at the core.
You don't have to remove the centre console, just the sides (which you have
already done).
You have to disconnect the vacuum lines to the vacuum motors on the heater
box from underneath, remove the connector from the wiring harness that runs
through the heater box flange and pull the wiring through.
There is also a rubber boot which connects the box to the rear seat heating
duct. You have to remove this and make sure it goes back on when you
re-install the box.
Most of the work is done from above under the hood. You have to disconnect
the heater hoses and all wiring. The box is glued to the firewall with an
adhesive gasket which makes it a real PITA to get out. I fought with both
of my Type 44s to cut the gasket and pry out the box and finally made a
heater box puller for the S4 which made it a snap to get out.
Once the box is out, you have to take it apart to get out the heater core.
There is at least one screw (maybe two - bad memories fade quickly) which
is hidden at the bottom of a deep well cast in the box. If the box doesn't
separate easily, you have missed a screw somewhere.
While you have the box apart, replace the blower motor - trust me on this,
you don't want to do this job again.
It's been a while since I've done this and I have probably missed a number
of steps, but that's the gist of the job. It took me about 5-6 hours to
replace the heater core and blower motor on both my Type 44s.

Ok, tried the instructions on Chris Miller's site and SJMAutoteknik
(spelling?), to no avail. The problems remains getting the damn thing out.
The heater core exploded a few weeks back, etc, etc.
Do I go about it from underneath, through the center console?
All indications seem to say yes, but getting the center console OUT has
become a problem. I have the side panels off (the rug-covered portions that
peoples feet bump into), but the diagrams in the bentley show a little
panel near the e-brake that has to come off. No dice. There just doesn't
seem to be a way into this panel that my feeble skills/hands can
handle...Anyone have any ideas?
And, of course, another friendly wrench is always welcome (southern NH,
exit 5 off of 101.) on the weekend...We grill, and she serves beer.
