If you're set on having a V8 in the car, I'd look for a wrecked A8 donor
car and install
the drivetrain from the A8 into your car. You may need the replace the
front subframe in
order to mount the V8 in the car. You'll also have to upgrade the
suspension to handle
the extra weight.
Most likely it would be cheaper just to get a different car.
The S4/S6 4.2 that never came to the US is basically what you're looking
for, w/ the
4-speed autobox. Mounting of the A8 engine would be best accomplished by
referencing
the Euro parts fiche for the S6 4.2 and comparing it to the A6 and
seeing what needs
to be changed. Then you'll need to figure out whether or not you'll need
the dash out
of the A8, as the A4 and A6 require the dashboard electronics to operate
properly, if
you do an engine transplant using the OEM electronics.
Maybe a '97 A8 is really what you need. They're relatively cheap now to
buy, under $20k
on ebay.
