Dunno if this will be of any help or not. Here goes. The father of my best friend from high school owns a Ford dealership. Over the years I've overheard quite a few stories about what he feels is best in a service manager. One such service manager at the dealership in question, is a friend of mine. One thing that has been said is that the last thing you want as a service manager is a former mechanic. Service is the bread and butter of a dealership.
One of my frineds from the local BMW chapter owns an independent BMW shop. He owns an Audi, there Audi content, :>) My wife and I are also members of a local Z3 club. I do a wee bit of co-driving. I've had Mustangs and Merkurs. Read battle scares.
My wife and I currently own a 98 BMW 323iS, 98 M roadster, and '00 A4 2.8QMS Avant. In the past, we have had a '97 BMW 2.8 roadster and I've owned a '87 4000csq open rally car.
I'm also an electronics tech, electrical engineer and a lawyer, patent lawyer. As you might imagine, quite a few fellow attorneys own BMW, Lotus, Porsche, etc. So, here's some observations. Many of these folks fall into the following categories: 1.) can afford it; but, can afford no time to do it or learn it, 2.)can afford it, do it themselves because they love it, 3.) can afford it, need it now, time matters, no idea how to do, and time matters, did I mention time matters?, 4.) warranty. read period., 5.) lease it. 6.) Good for picking up girls, or guys, whichever the case may be. 7.) Got no business owning, sell their sole for it.
So what does that tell you? Well, these cars are pretty darn expensive, so people that have them generally have some intelligence to have accumilated enough money to buy one. Those that don't have money that have one have some dedication which in part translates to intelligence or having educated themselves enough to get one.
Biggest caution and my personal turn off is when people don't tell me because they think I won't know, or don't care. Look to see which one you're dealing with. Deliver on time, on budget.
Godspeed, best wishes, LDM
