RS2 turbocharger

reality now is that you no longer need to sacrifice the low-speed frailty of
a larger turbo, to enjoy the high-speed benefits. this is certainly true in
the audi world now with larger capacity turbo'ed engines, as well as the use
of 2 smaller turbos, and better electronics, and the concentration on torque
rather than outright power. if you want to see the ultimate expression of
this, read the recent "autocar" article on the rs6.

and it is certainly my experience that the lethargic rs2 turbo below 3k rpm
can be a real pain. for example, on one of my favourite roads there was a
uphill 90 degree left hander which you would approach fast in 3rd. changing
to 2nd would mean that you exited the corner @2k rpms. "one-mississippi",
"2 mississippi", "3 mississippi", and then you're off. changing to 1st is
not on with the 6 speed because it is too slow (baulky), and also too low
geared. the ur_q in 2nd was so much faster through this corner that it
wasn't funny.

also pertinent to this discussion is what "car and driver" had this to say
about the rs4:

<<"The old RS2 perpetuated the notion that heavily turbocharged engines had
two distinct phases: languid and explosive. Now, however, the RS4's 30-valve
V-6 is unobtrusive and silent at low revs, building to its maximum output
smoothly and progressively with virtually no lag. Acceleration is effortless
in the way of, say, big V-8 powered Benzes, so that passengers are often
unaware of the speeds being summoned.">>

Thing is, this conversation is nothing new, everyone knows that if you want
V8 torque response below 3krpm the K24 is the way to go, and if you want
great, strong midrange and good upper end the RS2 is the way to go.

Now, if you don't want to spend the $1500 plus to get the RS2 (which I
wonder about the people who do), there are plenty of great options out there
for under $800. Nothing that special about the RS2, its no K24, I like to
call it a K25.
