vacuum line overhaul time...sizes, clamps?

Need to replace a bunch of lines and today's the day.

Consulting the FA, I see some hose sizes mentioned:

3.5x2(used, solely, it appears, for the bypass valve)
4x1.75(looks like the most popular)

I did end up at Foreign Autopart once and they had at least one size,
so that'll be my first try, I guess.

There's also several different clamps listed, but mostly,
311-133-343-A, "retaining clip"...that little crimp thing we all know
and -love-. But wait...for the bypass valve, there's a clamp listed
as N 024 528 1, or "LC8-12"; same thing for the fuel pressure
regulator.

While I can probably get these clamps from the local VW dealer, how
are they actually...uh..."activated"?...or will it be obvious upon
seeing a "virgin" clip?

Given how much of a royal PITA these things are to get off, I'm all
ears to alternatives. Dan had some little spring-like clips that
looked interesting; squeeze with pliers to widen, slip over, let go.
Anyone used these and found them suitable? Screw-type clamps won't
work in a couple of places, like the bypass valve w/the recessed
connection...
