4kq thermostat

I'm getting ready to go out and change the thermo on the 4k and since this
is my first time I was wandering if there were any helpful hints or any
hidden surprises waiting out there.
Should I remove the hose then the housing or the housing with hose still
attached?
Lots of coolant loss?
Would pinching the hose down help prevent coolant loss while I do this or
would that be damaging to it?
