Screwy Fuel gauge?

Hi Y'all,

Patient: '95 S6

Several times in the past few weeks the little gas pump icon has appeared
unexpectedly.  The gauge has, at these times, indicated that the tank was
totally empty.  The needle was all the way to the left just like it would
be with the ignition off.  I stopped and filled the tank and found that I
could put in only about 13 gallons.  The tank capacity is several gallons
more than that amount.  Each time after fill-up the gauge started working
again but it never showed a completely full tank only reaching about 7/8
full indicated.

This afternoon I happened to catch what was happening.  The needle was
pointing to just below 1/4 tank remaining.  Suddenly the gauge needle
started moving to the left just as iff the ignition had been switched off
and then the gas pump icon flashed on.  Fill-up took 13.46 gallons.

There is obviously something wrong somewhere, probably in the tank depth
sensor or that circuit or somewhere else associated with the gauge.

Has anyone else observed this behavior?  What causes it?  What was done
about it?  Suggestions?
