I have done the headliner myself, it is an awful job, but can be done. The
headliner fabric is available in fabric stores, about $8.00 per yard. Unlike
most cars, the cardboard backer is glued to the roof. A lot of cars, notably
SAAB, permit removal of the headliner. This makes reupholstery a "bench job".
They are right about attempts to re-glue, I never had any success. If you
attempt it, the important thing is to remove all of the old foam remnants. I
accomplished this with adhesive remover and steel wool. An alternative is the
headliner from an '84, no cloth.
My '89 turbo minivan has two factory "buttons" in the center of the
roof. I'll have to check as to what they do. The appearance isn't bad and
they come in a variety of colors. The extended van has four.
