Very interesting...
I somewhat discount the Abt DTM effort in general as having much connection
to Audi, if no other reason there's no such thing as a mid-engine V8 TT ;-)
I believe there actually is some "wink and nod' support from Audi to Abt, if
nothing else they did let Christian Abt drive an R8 at Le Mans... That would
explain why the engine's origin would remain rather, uh, quiet.
Point still being, back on topic now, that Audi is capable of competing with
the best from a performance development Engineering aspect, but as has been
aptly pointed out in this thread, their Marketing decisions tend to fall a
bit short from the enthusiast's perspective.
