Ok, let me start with that if your car is popping out of gear, you likely
need more than shifter parts.
I recently bought a well used 88 90q and it had what I understand as a
typical sloppy shifter. I was in a hurry to get the car on the road as it
needed control arm bushings and a heater core (reason for selling cheap), It
still needs struts. While doing the heater core I looked at the shifter and
found that the rubber had separated from the metal, just as yours. I just
filled the gap with silicone gasket sealer and let cure. The hardest part
was leaving it alone until completely cured. I did pull a snap ring or
maybe two to get better access to stick the tip of the silicone tube in.
Six months later and the shifter is still great, but the struts still need
replacing.
