Over here the term 'rebuilt' or 'remanufactured' isn't used. They're called 'exchange'
parts - you take an old one in and come away with a new one. Lots of people associate the old
one they're handing in with what they get in return and assume it's an overhauled return
item - in the vast majority of cases it's actually a brand new item.

I have seen rebuilt items. We had an alternator fail on quattro 2000 and it was one of the
'rare' ur-quattro ones - only ever 50 or so built. I KNOW that Bosch rebuilt that alternator
(overnight, BTW) because I had to supply it for transport to the factory. When it came back,
it was VERY hard to tell it from a brand new one - just a few dings on the casing. When I
showed it to the car's owner, he asked how I knew it was rebuilt. I said it was still warm.
