I've successfully removed several i-5 rear main seals with a standard seal
puller.
new seal is cheap and i didn't want to mess with the flange and mess
something up.
i just cleaned the surfaces with brake clean sparingly and packed the new
seals with grease and eased it in
voila none have leaked yet..
as far as the flange IMO it's a waste of money but if you don't have
experience with seating seals evenly
buy the flange and be done with it. nothing worse than tearing everything
back apart because the seal wasn't
seated correctly.
HTH!
