Sandblasting is sweet!

Douglas,
Yes, there is a heck of a lot of different media that can be used for
blasting. That is often called "Media Blasting" instead of "Sand Blasting".
You are probably referring to Glass Bead media - I've used glass bead
blasting on a few DKW parts - less agressive than the sand, but it still
works its way into every seam and passage of the part. It took me about
three hours of shaking, compressed air blasts, etc. to get the glass beads
out of the filter assembly. I've heard of lots of different types of
media - pretty nearly anything that will fit through the nozzle - even
ground-up walnut shells (the mice left lots of these in my '62), and dry ice
(what if the part gets dropped while blasting, though? Smash?!!?) You
could probably use something like baking soda to feather the edges of a chip
in a galvanized car's paint, but it may take an eternity (and mess up the
driveway, and leave you with a stinky fridge if you don't replace the Cow
Brand the next shopping day.....)
I think that Rob mentioned a cheap "Sand Blaster" though, and from how he
described it "eating" everything (paint, grease, glue, sealer, Rob's
gloves......) sounds like he was using sand.
