A new set of leads should run at most $50 these days, with "bosch"
stamped all over them, a plastic tube just like Audi stock, and the
proper metal thingies around the plug ends.

Around 84-85 or so, the leads, coils and caps all change to this other
method of attachment. (scratches head) There is a certain amount of
interchangability between them.... but I can't remember what it is. I
like the later ones much better. I think your earlier style leads might
fit the later dist cap - look inside the holes in the towers - don't
they have copper "linings" as well as the post in the middle of the
hole?
So long as your old leads are simply terminated with metal formed into a
cylinder shape, they'll work. Some of them are sort of solid, and
won't.
You can put the metal sheild on any dist cap, I busted the black
composite one off the last one I bought to stay with my powder coated
yellow sheild... new caps with the black sheild, of course, don't
actually *need* to have this done. Use them the way they are and chuck
the metal sheild.
I even have coil leads around with different ends. I don't know why.
