PS pump rebuild

I'm in the process of rebuilding the PS pump on my CQ - it's the funky half
piston/half vane type pump.  Everything is very straightforward except for
ONE thing:  I cannot figure out how to get the pistons out of the piston
side...and I would like to do that so that I can replace the seals that may
be leaking.  It looks like from the top there is a big "X" shaped place
where a VERY large flathead screwdriver would be used to open it up....my
largest screwdriver will not open it.
Does this require a special tool or something?  Or am I doing it all wrong?
