Car is fixed - fuel pump relay was fried.
Replaced with relay from private stash (marked "Fuel pump relay, from
junkyard, 9/98, probably good"), turned key, VAROOOM!!! Car started right up.
Note to self, get another spare (or two) from the junkyard, carry in trunk
with extra fuses.
Opening the old relay showed a burnt area on the pc board down near the
bottom.
All in all, the least stressful, least expensive, least difficult
automotive failure I've EVER had. I must make some sacrifice to the Audi
gods, they have treated me VERY WELL and VERY KINDLY today.

Well phooey - it stopped and won't run.
Car is my (more or less) faithful 86 5 KS, non turbo, non Q, 5 speed.
Went to an airshow (small one, local), car ran fine. Got done, hit starter,
car started for about two seconds and died.
No further response. Engine cranks nicely, smell of gas, all fuses good,
master relay working because the windows work.
No spark. (not 100% verified - I cranked, someone else looked - he didn't
see anything.)
Whip out AAA+ card, borrow cell phone, yell for help. Biker dude arrives
with flatbed about an hour later (nice day, sit in shade, watch airplanes),
put car onto flatbed, and thanks to AAA+, car and me both delivered to home
for free, where I have tools, parts, Bentley, etc.
Coulda been worse.
Anyway, here I am in my office, car isn't running - no start.
Cranks well, smell of fuel, fuses good, master relay works (because the
windows work).
I am now officially open to suggestions as to where to start looking - I'm
going out to attack it in about half an hour.
Best Regards,
Mike Arman
