pardon my ignorance

I agree with Mark. A Haynes or Chilton-type manual is a good place to start
(get the Bentley too, if you can afford it). If you haven't done a certain
procedure before, the Haynes manuals give a better step-by-step break down.
Sometimes the Bentley assumes too much for a novice ie. Step (1) Remove the
transmission :-(

Going straight to the Bentley is like skipping a few grades in Math--can get
frustrating to the point that you could lose interest. If you start small
and have success that will just build your confidence and you will have
fun...and you should always have fun...no matter how pissed off, hurt,
frustrated, confused or drunk you get!!

If you keep at it, you will definitely need the Bentley at some stage. Even
if you don't, it's a great reference to help diagnose any problem before
you take it to a garage and good for them to have access to it as well.
Believe it or not, despite the crap flinging around here the past day or so,
you have come to a good place where there are alot of very knowledgeable,
helpful people. I believe that you can't have too much information as long
as it doesn't come at you all at once.

Good luck,
John
