80/90/CQ Clutch Return Spring

I have a '91 Coupe Quattro that I am about to replace the clutch over-center
spring on.
Pulled the seat back, smashed my chin against the pedals and got the old
spring out without any difficulty. The old spring just fell down, there was
nothing holding it in place.
Cant put the new spring in place. Due to severe cramping, I cant position the
fire wall end of the spring correctly. How do I get the spring in there?! Do I
take out any parts?
If I left the spring out, what would happen? The clutch appears to work fine.
Thanks in advance.
Chris
