Do I

1) Put on safety glasses.
2) Clamp the spring lengthwise in a vise to compress it fully.
3) Install baling wire around the spring to hold it "short."
4) Install spring.
5) Cut baling wire off.

All the spring does is store some (leg) energy in the first half of travel
to give it back in the second half of travel. If you have big legs (well, at
least one leg), no worries!
