gas mileage

I would verify that the computer is giving accurate data before I acted to
address the "problem." Maybe there is no fuel mileage problem, but you
have a computer accuracy problem.
How to do this? Fill the tank to the top on a level gas station surface,
and drive the car a few hundred miles along a route that has a known length
in miles.....like between several cities and back. This eliminates the
possibility of an odometer error. Set your odometer to zero at the start,
and see if it reads what you know to be the correct mileage when your trip
is over. Maps will tell you the mileage between cities, as will Mapquest.
When your trip is finished, go back to the same gas station and park in
front of the same pump, facing the same direction as before. Again, fill
the tank to the top the same way you did the first time.
Make a note of the gallons. Divide the miles you traveled by the gallons
you used. Compare the answer with the computer reading for
miles-per-gallon. If they both are the same, then start spending money to
correct the cause of the low mpg.
