All this talk of exhaust and flow is great.
I had a cat-back system installed at the local exhaust place a couple years
ago using 2.5" tubing. Since he did not mandrel bend, I told the guy to
make the cuves very smooth and start them sooner than necessayr to lessen
restriction. The exhaust was minus mid-muffler and used the Dynomax
SuperTurbo box. Big improvement, but not as dramatic as I was expecting.
Total cost $150.
A month ago, I had a bullet muffler installed to cut down on the 55-60mph
resonances. No loss in power says the pants. Total cost $28.
Fastfoward to a few weeks ago, the cat was removed and in its place a spare
'stock' cat with a pipe running in the center of the section was installed.
Major improvement. Throttle response is way up and boost comes on much
sooner and stronger. When they say the cat is the bottle neck they joke
not. Bear in mind this is still a 2" in and out of the cat. Improvement
still to come. Total cost $couple hours of my time with a
pipe/hammer/welder.
So what? Save the money and go to the local exhaust place and have it done.
Total cost is much lower than you think and the gains are substantial.
