Now, why do engines all turn in the same direction?

The old General Motors (Detroit) Diesels could be set up of CW or CCW
rotation.
I also remember some of the sprint car boys setting up their V 8 engines to
rotate in the opposite direction to help pull the car into a left hand corner.
Apparently not all starters rotate in the same direction either:
