it's almost always the outer ones, they work harder (on the front,
anyway).

that's why the test is to drive in as tight a circle as you can in each
direction and listen for that nasty clicking.

of course, a bad/torn boot can be a dead giveaway.

If the noise doesn't change with steering input, it might be an inner
one.

since the best/cheapest fix is usually a good used half shaft (with new
boots...) you end up swapping them both anyway.
