Deep technical description, which I wont go into here. Basically, the
names are diffeernt because they come from different manufacturers. VW
has registered the TDI name, whcih stands for Turbo Direct Injection.
The injector nozzle sits right into the combustion chamber. The CDI from
Mercedes also has the injector installed in this manner, but the C in
the name stands for Common Rail. It is a high pressure system where the
fuel runs in a common rail for all injectors, and each injector opens up
for a squirt when told to by the computer. The high pressure makes the
oil vaporize easier and ensure a cleaner, more efficient combustion
process. The high torque values is a nice sideeffect from this. Audi
uses Common Rail on the 3.3 V8 TDI in the A8.
The Mercedes CDI engines are on their way to the US market. Not in the
Mercedes passenger cars, but in the Mercedes Sprinter vans and buses,
which are to be sold as Freightliner Sprinter.

One of the fastest today are the BMW 330d, with 227 kmh top speed. It
does the 0-100 kmh sprint in only 7.8 secs. It has 184 hp and 390 Nm at
only 1750 rpm.
