81 UrQ timing issues

Hi Folks,
Just got my rebuilt (81 WR) engine back into the car and started.  The
mechanic took it for a shakedown cruise and reports detonation/pinging at
even moderate levels of boost, almost anything over atmosphere.
The only "apparant" issue is the fact that timing at idle is 40 degrees
which is 30 degrees plus out of spec.  All manual timing adjustments have
been made.  Oddly the car idles fine and starts fine, I would think that
sort of range would make starting tough.  A very cursory checked seemed to
have all sensors properly wired and functioning. All vacuum hoses seem in
proper places.  Hopefully I will double check with specs tomorrow.
Any ideas that may have been missed improperly reinstalled when the engine
went back in?  Any and all BTDT's welcome.
