Just having a diagnostic connector and being able to extract some diag
info doesn't mean that it's OBD-II compliant.  VW and Audi has been
using this sort of capability from cars of even earlier vintage.  The OBD-II
stuff mandate the use of the ISO-9141 connector on the car end and a
set of specific protocol and information.  The VW/Audi people cleverly
incorporated their own proprietary stuff into the same interface in the
post-96 M.Y. cars.  Tools like VAG-COM gives the VAG-specific stuff, but
does not provide the OBD-II data like some of the other OBD-II scan tools
such as Baum's OBDtool, not to be confused with Baum's VDSpro/VWtool) do.
