You'd have to open the trunk to remove the tail light.  On an '87 5ktq,
you'd be better off taking out the driver side tail light because the trunk
lock actuator is located on the left side of the trunk lid (lock button is
in center of trunk lid).

If he has a ski bag, he could get into the trunk through that opening.  My
200q20v and V8 ski bags both have zippers in them that I don't recall being
in my 5ktq (which currently is a storage point for some spare seats).  I'd
suggest slicing the fabric on the top for about two feet and then "fixing"
that opening later by installing a zipper.

What's wrong with the lock?
