Yep, you're right... I had a longer chat to Dad last night, and it's
apparently pretty cool...
So for general acceleration, you put it in 'auto' mode and plant your foot,
it locks the revs at peak power and uses the gearing to achieve maximum
acceleration, then if approaching a corner, you can shift it over to the
'manual' gate, and use that to allow more control through the corner...

yeah, dad's impression was that the gearbox was actually a bit harsh for
the v6 it was mated to...

yeah, a pity I didn't get a drive either...
but according to what dad said, it sounds like a pretty cool gearbox...!
