It uses those 6 dummy speeds only when you have the shifter in the
'manual' gate. In the fully auto mode, it's supposed to be completely
stepless.

There is indeed an electronic-controlled lock-up clutch instead of
the torque convertor found in slushboxes. This is partly what gives the
multitronic its sprightly performance compared to a traditional slushbox.
I have not driven a multitronic car to report on the feel. This is all
based on what I have read.
