A/C adjuster bolt removal: back here yet again

Yet again I can't get the A/C belt off.

I clearly remember that the last bit of travel was yielded by removal
of both bolt and toothed nut that make up the adjuster for the A/C
compressor.

I can back the lock bolt out freely a decent bit, but soon it starts
binding on the toothed nut; probably the threads are hitting the
inside of the toothed nut.

Okay, so I put it back in a couple turns until things loosen up
again. I grip the toothed adjuster with visegrips and
wiggle/pull/etc. Nothing. Jam a small screwdriver in there and try
to pry/pop it out. Nothing.

I -know- I got this adjuster out last time, and I -know- it was the
only way to get the belt completely off+on.

What am I missing?
