Hi all,
Those into the turbo fivebangers might think this is a piece of junk, but
tonight I've driven my 1978 Audi 80 GLX home. I bought it from a guy who
had it parked up in his haystack for the last five years. We changed the
battery and the plugs, put fresh fuel in it and drove the bejasus out of it
for 110 km. :-)
It's the final incarnation of the type 82 (Fox) with a 1.6 YN engine, and I
think it's an 85 instead of a 75 hp engine. This thing is seriously fast! I
made it to 160 km/h (empty, long and straight road, because the brakes
weren't that good) in no time, it cruised comfortably at 130. It smells
like a henhouse and is incredibly dirty inside, but it's all there and
undamaged. It came with a carload of spares, all made of unobtanium for as
long as I can remember.
It's quite rusty (front doors and rear wheelarches are beyond redemption
and I haven't even looked underneath) so it'll become a spares car but it's
a two-owner car with all the documentation and otherwise very nice. I've
enjoyed driving it, apart from the seat adjustment range being too short,
it's an excellent car to drive. The seats are very comfortable and at
130-140 km/h - four-speed gearbox and perforated exhaust notwithstanding -
it was reasonably quiet.
In short: these are fun cars and very much worth saving. They're rapidly
disappearing, so if you're into old Audis grab one of these before they're
all gone. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the dynamic qualities and the
amount of fun you can get out of so few hp...
