I have noticed something similar but never really investigated - on
different year (82 vs 86) fwd trannies.

the later trannies have what appear to be bigger flanges.

since this change would have occurred around 84/85 on the fwd cars,
probably around the change to 2.2 engine, hydro clutch, lower gears,
maybe something similar occurred on a running basis in '84 with the Q
trannies too.  I wonder if the family album sheds any light on it?

I would have thought swapping half shafts would be better - but I
suppose the flange swap was easier.
