Sorry, I knew that didn't come out quite right, thanks for the info.

We didn't have half shafts to swap- only bought a transmission, not a
whole
parts car, so we swapped flanges. Also, the CVs were recently repacked
and have
new boots, so it would have been bad to have to swap halfshafts had we
had them.

I guess what I'm really getting at is why did they change the flanges?
Are the
early transmissions prone to some sort of failure and that's why they
beefed up
the flanges?
