Sze, Huw, and all,
This sounds like classic fuel starvation.

--If not recently(within 5k miles) done, replace the filter between the tank
and the pump.  Fuel supply to the fuel pump is by gravity feed.  When the
tank nears empty, you only have about 1ft of head.  Adding fuel increases the
supply pressure; it doesn't need to be premium.
--Also replace the HP filter after the fuel pump.

I don't own a 5k, but if it has an ECU fuse(like the 4kq), I would check it.

Lastly, I would swap in a spare ignition control module.
