CQ: transmission whine - is this normal?

I have just purchased a mid '91 euro 10v CQ which seems to be pretty solid although with a few of the standard niggles - dodgy air vent control, some non-functioning lamps, etc. One thing, however, which wasn't really apparent when I took it for a (probably too short) test drive is a slight transmission whine - similar to what I have heard from rear wheel drive differentials but not as loud. Appears to be coming from the gearbox/centre diff area and not the rear. Definitely road speed related so I'm assuming it's coming from the final drive or diffs. Noise does not vary when accelerating/braking hard or on tight turns. I haven't had a chance to check fluid levels yet but, having not driven quattros before I'm not sure what noise, if any would be expected with a car of this age - the odometer reading is approx 107000 miles.
TIA,
Ewan Hopkins.
